From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell
You can feel the excitement in the air this week at WHYS as a
record breaking number of students has cracked the books and
sefarim. Each week in the high-lites we will focus on one of the
many new and exciting programs this year at WYHS in the
feature article column at the right. This week read about our
groundbreaking, pro-active alumni program.
Contrary to previous calendars, Sunday mishmar begins this
weekend. Click on the Schedule Change link below the
alumni article for some additional, minor adjustments in the school
calendar.
I want to thank Mrs. Amy Horowitz for joining the Yeshiva
High-lites team to provide you with this informative (and,
hopefully, entertaining) newsletter.
The staff and I are looking foward to seeing all the parents
on Wednesday night.
Shabbat Shalom

Our
Strongest Start Yet |
|
The new school year got off to a running start with fun
and fact filled orientations. After receiving personalized
daily class schedules and textbooks, the freshmen enjoyed
pizza and make-your-own-sundaes and the
returning students had a delicious barbecue.
A special program for Rosh Chodesh Elul kicked off
our first full day of school. We had live music and
dancing courtesy of student (now alumni) band Torahck, in
their last American performance in 2003, before leaving this
week for yeshivot in Israel.
Rabbis Broide, Lanner, and Spodek, and English and drama
instructor Mrs. Saddler, presented a meaningful (and
hilarious) skit about the impact of decisions one makes
during high school on the course of his/her life.
In the wake of the recent bus bombing in Meah Shearim,
WYHS Founder Rabbi Brander closed the program with a
powerful message about using tragedy as a way to improve
ourselves.
Juniors and seniors volunteered to be big brothers and
big sisters to the new freshmen. Each upperclassmen
phoned, e-mailed and decorated the locker of his/her "little
sibling" after the first day of school to make them feel at
home at WYHS.

There's a Storm
Brewing |

Congratulations to the Yeshiva Storm girls
volleyball team on their first victory. Team captains
seniors Elana Kasztl, Shira Pritzker, and Dina Turetsky lead
the team to defeat American Heritage 3 games to 2 on

The Yeshiva Storm boys soccer team, played two tough
games this week against American Heritage and Posnack.
Junior Jake Singer made some particularly difficult
saves, with the help of senior Danny Krasna (pictured at
right) and the Storm defense. Senior Bryan Lieber was
outstanding on offense, giving his all to make some incredible
plays! Kudos to sophomore Jordan Lieber for scoring a goal in
Thursday's game!

Goals for the New
Year |
|
Last year we set three schoolwide goals for
WYHS: ensuring excellence in education, increasing parental
involvement, and inspiring each and every student.
Much was accomplished in these areas last year.
This year we have set our sights even higher in each
arena.

goals for the new year.

WYHS
Doesn't End With Graduation Anymore |
|
As the number of WYHS graduates who are
studying on large (and at times, impersonal) college campuses
grows, we recognize the need to extend the WYHS experience
beyond the four years of high school.
Graduate Chava Turk (front left in the picture above),
has excepted the position of WYHS' first alumni
coordinator. With Chava's help, WYHS teachers will be in
regular communication with their former students.
WYHS will send Judaic teachers to visit alumni on
college campuses across the country, to run
shabbatonim in cities where WYHS alumni are studying,
such as New York and Boston, and to continue to run alumni
get togethers in South Florida during college breaks.
In addition, WYHS faculty will continue to visit recent
graduates in Israel who are studying in yeshivot and
seminaries to counsel them about how to make the most of their
Israel and college experiences.
